A Message From Andrew Holmes

Thank you for your interest in sponsoring me for 2018 Tour DaVita! Your support – whether moral, financial or both – means more than you know.

As most of you know, kidney disease has plagued my family for generations.  There are many different kidney diseases that ultimately lead to kidney failure and the need for dialysis and/or transplant.  For my family the disease is Polycystic Kidney Disease.  PKD affects 500,000 people throughout the United States and is the 4th leading cause of kidney failure. It’s an inherited disease in which cysts develop on the kidneys. There is no treatment and once kidney failure occurs, the only remedies are transplant or dialysis. My great grandmother died of PKD at age 51 when her Kidneys failed and at that time was considered too old for dialysis.  My grandmother received dialysis and a transplant when I was a young boy and later died from complications of the disease. My father learned that his kidneys were failing and ultimately required a transplant. My 4 brothers and I have a 50/50 chance of inheriting the disease, with relative probability of either being a donor or a patient.

My understanding of how this disease affects individuals has guided me in both my personal and professional life.  I am so excited to be able to ride for the second time in Tour DaVita alongside my Dad and my two brothers to raise money for this amazing cause.  Tour DaVita is so much more than a bike ride. It’s an amazing adventure and a physical challenge, but it’s also an extension of our day-to-day calling to “give life” to others.

That’s because our 2018 beneficiary is Bridge of Life (BOL), a nonprofit organization founded by DaVita. BOL serves thousands of men, women and children through four programs: kidney care, primary care, prevention and education, and kids’ camps.  By supporting me on this ride, your donation will help to improve healthcare across the globe.

If I can meet my fundraising goal by the mid-summer deadline, I’ll be on track to ride with the rest of the group in Spetember.  I truly believe in this cause and know that with your help we are making steps to creating a better and happier place for those in need.  I’d appreciate your support – any amount will help!
