Thank you for your interest in sponsoring me for 2018 Tour DaVita! Your support – whether moral, financial or both – means more than you know.

Tour DaVita is so much more than a bike ride. It’s an amazing adventure and a physical challenge, but it’s also an extension of our day-to-day calling to “give life” to others.

That’s because our 2018 beneficiary is Bridge of Life (BOL), a nonprofit organization founded by DaVita, Inc. working to strengthen healthcare in underserved communities around the globe. BOL serves thousands of men, women and children through four programs: kidney care, primary care, chronic disease prevention, and kids’ camps. (You can learn more about BOL to the left.) By supporting me on this ride, your tax-deductible donation will help to strengthen healthcare in underserved communities around the globe.

If I can meet my fundraising goal by the mid-summer deadline, I’ll be on track to ride with the rest of the group from September 22-26. I’d appreciate your support – any amount will help!

Also, would you consider sending a link to this page to your friends and family? I’d like to have them on my support team, too.

I am so excited!

I was able to register my lovely wife for Tour DaVita so she will be riding with me this year. She started riding late last summer and has been training with me (when the weather cooperates). She rode with me in her first bike rally this last weekend in Muenster, TX at the Germanfest Bike Rally. We rode 40 miles, up and down quite a few hills. She was super excited to finish it. The weather was beautiful and the beer at the Germanfest afterwards was cold and included with the bike registration…..pretty good deal. We will be riding every Monday and Wednesday evening and most Saturdays, preparing for the big Tour in September. This weekend we are planning on riding 50 miles in the Great Austin to Shiner Pedal in Shiner, TX. The ride begins and ends at the Shiner Brewery……are you starting to pick up on a theme?

Thanks again to everyone that supported Bridge of Life last year and already this year. If you can support both of us great but if you can only support one of us, please support my wife as she is very worried about raising the required donations.

GASP!

Great Austin to Shiner Pedal is the name of the ride we did May 5th. Although, we “only” did the 50 mile option from Shiner back to Shiner, specifically from the Spoetzl Brewery back to the Spoetzl Brewery.

The morning was perfect, about 62 degrees and sunny. We headed north into the wind for 25 miles. Within the first mile I hear someone over my shoulder yell, “Hey, do you work for DaVita!?”. I was wearing my Tour DaVita jersey. The next mile or so I talked to Christie, a dietician from the  DaVita clinic in Victoria. She is signed up for her 4th Tour DaVita. Small world.

The scenery was picturesque; rolling hills blanketed with colorful wild flowers. The last 20 miles was the best, with the wind at our back and thoughts of Shiner Bock and Bar-B-Q in our heads. We arrived back at the brewery and fell into our lawn chairs under the shade of a huge oak tree on the lawn of the brewery, after grabbing 1 of our 4 free ice cold beers, of course. We were surrounded by a sea of tired riders enjoying the same rewards.

After 2 beers and 2 large smoked sausages, we slothed over to the brewery for a tour which unfortunately started with a climb up a flight of stairs. Among many interesting facts, we learned that the first “Bock” beers were brewed only 6 weeks a year by Bavarian monks during Lent. Their fast would only include bread, water and “Bock” beer.

It was a great ride and another step on our climb to preparedness for Tour DaVita this year in Virginia.

Downtown Dallas on a bicycle sounds CRAZY.

Riding TO Downtown Dallas FROM Coppell on a bicycle sounds CRAZY, too.

That is exactly what my wife and I did on Memorial Day! Not by ourselves, of course. We rode with a group of 18 starting at 8am from Coppell. East on Beltline, to Luna, to Valley View, then south on Marsh, past Love Field, straight into downtown. Our first stop was Klyde Warren Park for pictures. Then on to the Longhorns, JFK Memorial and Dealey Plaza. My trust In our group leader waned as we rode up the entrance ramp onto the Margaret Hunt Hill bridge….that is a “blankin” highway! But only 2 cars passed us and the freeway ends at the other end of the bridge, so no problem. Straight back on the walking bridge to Campisis’s patio overlooking the Eyeball for pizza.

Now it was 90 degrees and we had a long ride home. We were saved in Carrolton by stopping at a splash park and getting completely soaked by standing under one of those buckets that just dumps water on you. What a great experience!

I am sure Tour DaVita will be fun and challenging, so we are training for the Fun and the Challenge.
