A Message From Nick Holmes

Thank you for your interest in sponsoring me for 2018 Tour DaVita! Your support – whether moral, financial or both – means more than you know.

Some of you may know that my dad got a new lease on life in 2010 when my Uncle Lee Cassity donated a kidney to him.  My dad was in kidney failure, resulting from Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) that he inherited from his mother.  PKD affects 500,000 people throughout the United States and is the 4th leading cause of kidney failure; Cysts grow on the kidneys and eventually make them nonfunctional.  Currently, there isn't a cure.  My grandmother was 67 when she went into kidney failure and went on dialysis.  My great-grandmother was only 51 and died from the disease.  Dialysis was new in 1964 and she was told she was too old for the treatment.

Do I have the disease?  There's a 50/50 chance I do.  Two of my dad’s three siblings have it.  Only my older brother has been tested for the disease and fortunately he does not have it.  Hopefully my brothers and I will be so lucky.

Tour DaVita is so much more than a bike ride. It’s an amazing adventure and a physical challenge, but it’s also an extension of our day-to-day calling to “give life” to others.

That’s because our 2018 beneficiary is Bridge of Life (BOL), a nonprofit organization founded by DaVita, Inc. working to strengthen healthcare in underserved communities around the globe. BOL serves thousands of men, women and children through four programs: kidney care, primary care, chronic disease prevention, and kids’ camps. (You can learn more about BOL to the left.) By supporting me on this ride, your tax-deductible donation will help to strengthen healthcare in underserved communities around the globe.

Andrew, my older brother, is fortunate to work for DaVita and was excited to get involved with last year’s ride.  If I can meet my fundraising goal by the mid-summer deadline, I’ll be on track to ride with my dad, brothers and the rest of the group from September 22-26.  This cause hits close to home.  I’m excited to pay it forward and support those whose health is at risk.  With your help, we are making steps towards creating a better and happier place for those in need.  I would greatly appreciate your support.  Any amount will help!

Thank you,

Nick
