A Message From Stephen Holmes

Thanks to those of you that sponsored me in 2017.  The ride was an incredible event and very meaningful.  Riding with my two sons Scott and Andrew for such a great cause was a ton of fun.  Your donations made a difference as 100% went to Bridge of Life (BOL), a nonprofit organization founded by DaVita.  BOL helps to improve kidney care and education  across the globes for thousands of men, women and children.

I am lucking enough to ride again this year and ask for you support.  Any amount helps a great cause.  This year my son Nick will be joining us so there will be 4 Holmes riding to help raise awareness and funds for BOL.

MY KIDNEY STORY

As most of you know, I got a new lease on life in 2010 when my brother-in-law donated a kidney to me.  I was in kidney failure, resulting from Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) that I inherited from my mother.  PKD affects 500,000 people throughout the United States and is the 4th leading cause of kidney failure,  Cysts grow on the kidneys and eventually make them nonfunctional.  Currently, there isn't a cure.  My mother was 67 when she went into kidney failure.  My grandmother was only 51 and died from the disease, as dialysis in 1964 was new and she was told she was too old for the treatment.

Do my 5 sons have the disease?  There's a 50/50 chance they do.  Two of my three siblings have it.  Only one of my sons has been tested for the disease and fortunately he does not have it.  If only the rest could be so lucky.

Fortunately, medicine has advanced significantly since 1961 and companies like DaVita are to be thanked for the thousands of patients they assist each day so they can lead meaningful and productive lives.  Yet more can be done to improve the education and healthcare of Americans nationwide.  Your donation will go to help Bridge of Life (BOL), a nonprofit organization founded by DaVita. BOL serves thousands of men, women and children through four programs: kidney care, primary care, prevention and education, and kids’ camps.  By supporting me on this ride, your donation will help to improve healthcare across the globe.

Andrew, my oldest, is fortunate to work for DaVita and was excited to get involved this year with the ride.  My sons Scott, Nick and I are lucky to join him.  If I can meet my fundraising goal by the mid-summer deadline, I’ll be on track to ride with my sons and the rest of the group in September.  I truly believe in this cause and know that with your help we are making steps to creating a better and happier place for those in need.  I’d appreciate your support.  Any amount will help!  Also, sending this link to your friends and family would be very helpful. I’d like to have them on my support team, too.

Thanks!

Stephen
